Our Island

St. Martin, the smallest territory shared by two nations, is an island that offers its visitors a multi-faceted experience. Festive and cosmopolitan, the “friendly island” is a Caribbean landmark. The French side of the island is home to the gourmet capital of the Caribbean, luxury shopping, world class beaches, and of course a beautiful collection of luxury villas. The Dutch side offers excellent entertainment through its sensational night life, casinos, and many more activities like deep sea fishing and numerous water activities/sports.

Terres Basses, located on the French side, is a private gated community home to over 200 villas. The residence consists of 1400 acres bordered by the Caribbean Sea and the Simpson Bay Lagoon on the southeast. Terres Basses is known by many for its beautiful beaches, Baie Longue, Baie aux Prunes and Baie Rouge, but more importantly as the best place on the island to view the sunset. The 4 star hotel, Belmond La Samanna, is also located in Terres Basses on Baie Longue Beach.

The French Side

St. Martin, the northern “French Side” of the island (53 km2/20 sq. miles) is an overseas collectivity of France. French is the official language and the official currency is the euro. English is also widely spoken and the $US is accepted everywhere. The capital of St. Martin is Marigot with its chic European duty-free shopping and thriving market place.

Grand Case on the northern coast is a charming village renowned for its many fine restaurants, romantic waterfront dining and art galleries. The majority of St. Martin Sotheby's International Realty villas are located in an area known as Terres Basses (French Lowlands) on the Western tip of the island. Terres Basses is an exclusive gated enclave where properties are situated, for the most part, on a minimum of 2 acres. The area is home to the beautiful white sandy beaches of Baie Longue (location of hotel Belmond La Samanna), Baie aux Prunes (Plum Bay) and Baie Rouge. We also have several villas in the very popular Orient Bay area, home to Orient beach with its many restaurants, bars and water sports. Other villa locations on the French side are Happy Bay on the northern coastline and Anse Marcel with its marina and beach resort.

The Dutch Side

St. Maarten, the Dutch side of the island (34 km2- 13 sq. miles), is known for its tourist attractions including duty free shopping, dining, and many other activities that make the island unique in the Caribbean. The official language is Dutch but English is spoken everywhere. The official currency is the Netherlands Antilles guilder (ANG) but $US are accepted everywhere. The capital Philipsburg is bursting with duty-free jewelry and electronic stores offering unbeatable prices and numerous bars and restaurants along its famous “boardwalk”. The town is also home to a cruise ship terminal that welcomes some of the largest cruise vessels in the world especially during the winter months. The vibrant nightlife of St. Maarten is centered in the Maho and Simpson Bay areas with many casinos, nightclubs, bars and restaurants. This area of the Dutch side – Maho, is also the site of the Princess Juliana International Airport, one of the largest and most contemporary in the Caribbean, handling flights from all over the US and the major cities of Europe and South and Central America.

What makes the island so unique is that St. Maarten/St. Martin with a total area of just under 34 sq. miles, is the smallest land mass in the world shared by two different nations. This delightful and cosmopolitan little island, attracts a diversity of cultures and nationalities and has something to offer everyone that decides to visit this tiny paradise!
